Political Murder in Batumi

January 20, 2004

Political Murder in Batumi

Yesterday the Head of the Interior Ministry of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara, Temur Inaishvili, was murdered. The murder was allegedly conducted by a professional killer in the center of Batumi City.

Koba Khabazi, a representative of "Chveni Ajara", considers this to be a political assassination, and claims that Inaishvili was killed by the order of Aslan Abashidze for openly expressing his sympathy towards the new government.
However, according to the local government, the murder was purely criminal and could not be considered politically motivated.

Two members of the National Movement, Nemo Ananidze and Vazha Kakhidze, were detained in Batumi. Representatives of the Interior Ministry of Ajara detained them in the street without any charge.

The detainees are in currently being held in pre-trial isolation in the Interior Ministry of Ajara.
