Legal Action Against Shota Chichashvili Continues

February 12, 2004

Legal Action Against Shota Chichasvili Continues

Legal proceedings against Shota Chichashvili, who was extradited from Russia a month ago and is alleged to have committed serious crimes, will begin on February 20. According to Chichiashvili, law enforcement officials did not allow him to contact his attorney, to avoid spreading information to the public.

Yesterday,  the regional court began discussing Mevlud (Shota) Chichiashvili’s case, though the proceedings were temporarily interrupted because the defendant did not have an attorney. Chichashvili is being charged with kidnapping, menacing, and auto theft, in addition to robbery, extortion, and with carrying, keeping, transporting, and transferring weapons.

Mevlud Chichiashvili was detained six years ago on Rustaveli Ave. In 1998, the Mikanadze city court sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment for some of the above crimes. Chichashvili appealed to the Supreme Court, which reversed the ruling of the city court, and returned his case to the same court for further discussion. Judge Otar Baratashvili discussed the case and demanded further investigation. The imprisonment charges were reduced to light penitentiary measures (house arrest), and he was released from custody.

After the verdict of the regional court was announced, the prosecutor applied to the Supreme Court and once again demanded the arrest of Chichiashvili. The appeal of the prosecutor was accepted by the court, although it took 6 years to find and arrest Chichashvili again.
