Council of Europe Secretary General Welcomes the Release of Tenguiz Assanidze

Council of Europe Secretary General Welcomes the Release of Tenguiz Assanidze

Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer today expressed his great satisfaction following the release of former MP Tenguiz Assanidze. Authorities in the Ajarian Autonomous Republic detained Assanidze even after the President of Georgia granted him a pardon. The European Court of Human Rights, in its judgment on Thursday, April 8, determined that Adjaran Authorities had violated the European Convention on Human Rights, and asked Georgia to secure Assanidze's release at the earliest possible date.

“I would like to praise the Georgian and Adjarian authorities for having followed so quickly the Court’s injunction, putting an end to an intolerable situation of non-respect for the fundamental rights of a Georgian citizen”, Schwimmer said. Schwimmer also expressed his satisfaction with the ability of the Council of Europe to find an effective solution to the problem.

For more information see the press release (08.04.04) of the Court.
