Police Officers from Batumi Dismissed for Abuse

On the night of May 26, while making an arrest, Batumi police officers Emzar Papidze and Jemal Makharadze severely beat suspects Zaza Berdzenishvili and Zaza Tugushi. Berdzenishvili and Tugushi are activists for the group “Chveni Adjara”.

The Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities dismissed Papidze and Makharadze from the police force, and released Tugushi and Berdzenioshvili from custody.
