The UN Security Council is ready to prolong the stay of UN observers in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone until January 31, 2004.

According to Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, despite the fact that the sides have been cooperating in regard to security issues, the situation in the region is still tense, which makes it necessary to prolong the UN peace mission.

“The situation in Abkhazia cannot be called stable. In the region, and especially in Gali, human rights are violated every day; people are kidnapped, humiliated, killed. The issue of secure return of IDPs still remains unsolved,” stated the UN Secretary General.

He called on the Abkhazian side to cooperate with the Georgian government.

The prolongation of UN Peace Mission in Abkhazia will be voted on July 29.

The 6 month term of the UN military observers’ stay in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone expires on July 31.

The UN Peace Mission consists of 117 military observers and a group of civil police from 23 countries.
