Trade Unions Threaten Mass Protest

Tbilisi. 28.07.04. Media News.

Trade Unions of Georgia will hold a mass protest to defend the rights of the people who are victims of drastic staff changes and have been dismissed illegally. Prior to the protest, the trade unions will address each member of Parliament with a protest letter in which they condemn the amendments to the Labor Code made on June 24.

According to the old version of the Labor Code, the staff had to be given two months notice before they were dismissed.  In the new version, this term is decreased to one month.

In addition, according to the old Labor Code, a person was paid his average salary for one month after his dismissal, in the form of compensation. Furthermore, the average salary was retained during two months and considered as “leaving assistance.”
“On June 24, after making amendments to the Labor Code, one month and two month assistance has been cancelled. Trade Unions expressed their disappointment with the decision to the representatives of the executive and legislative authorities and call on them to take care of improvement of not only their own social conditions,” stated Irakli Tugushi, the Chairman of the Unions, who is going to introduce to the media the statistics of the number of people who have been dismissed recently.
