David Mirtskhulava is in a Comfortable Room

Tbilisi. Media News. David Mirtskhulava, the former Minister of Fuel and Energy, currently incarcerated in Tbilisi Jail No. 7, is  not in need of any medical treatment according to the statement by the Justice Ministry.
The Ministry issued the statement in response to Mirtskhulava’s attorney, Eka Beselia, who reported that  Mirtskhulava is suffering in some very bad conditions in jail. Beselia urges that despite the recommendations of the European Court of Human Rights, Mirtskhulava has not been taken to the Republic Hospital of the Penitentiary Department.

The Justice Ministry denies the information that Mirtskhulava is in such bad conditions, telling that he is not in a jail cell but in a medical room with windows, a television, refrigerator, water and all the conditions needed for a normal life.
Mirtskhulava’s attourney applied to the European Court of Human Rights on 27 July stating that his client is “slum conditions” in Jail No. 7 and that his health condition has been worsening day by day.

On 5 August the Ministry of Justice received a letter from the European Court recommending that Mirtskhulava be taken to the prison hospital or to another place where he can receive medical treatment.

Responding to this letter, the Justice Ministry of Georgia sent information to Strasbourg saying that Mirtskhulava was offered to be moved to the medical center of Tbilisi Jail No. 1 but he refused on the grounds that he preferred to say in the medical center of Jail No. 7.

The Justice Ministry of Georgia offered the European Court to send their representative to observe the place where Mirtskhulava is staying.
