The Draft Law on Military Chairs Is Being Prepared

Media News. The Georgian Parliament will discuss the draft law on “Military Compulsion and Military Service” at the second and third hearings of the first session of Parliament in autumn 2004.
President Saakashvili was the initiator of this draft law according to which the compulsory military service will last for 12 months instead of 18.
David Kirkitadze, the deputy head of the Parliamentary Committee of Defence and Security, stated that according to initial version the compulsory military service for people with higher education comprised six months but has now been changed to 12 months.
As Kirkitadze reported, the draft law is being prepared regarding the Military Chairs at Georgian universities which envisage the change of teaching methods therein. If this method will have no success then the issue of the cancellation of Military Chairs should be discussed.
If the draft law on “Military Compulsion and Military Service” is entered into force after the second and third hearing this means that people taking the course at Military Chairs will be free from military service.
