Non Governmental Organizations Protest against the Beating of Chechen Refugees

Tbilisi.08.09.04. Media News.

NGO – Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights protest the detention and torture of Rustam Anzorov, a Chechen refugee in Tbilisi.

As Gela Nikolaishvili, a member of the above-mentioned NGO stated at the press-conference, the Chechen refugee had been detained on August 24 in Chavchavadze Avenue in Tbilisi by a police patrol. He was taken to Vake-Saburtalo Police Department where he suffered physical injury.

At the conference Tariel Chochishvili, attorney of  the detainee, introduced the conclusion and photos of the expertise confirming the torture of Rustam Anzorov.

Rustam Anzorov has been charged with resisting the police as well as hooliganism. The General Prosecution has handed the case over to the Security Ministry for investigation.

The attorney insists that according to the law this kind of crime must be investigated by the prosecution not by the Security Ministry.

The Defense appealed to the Tbilisi Regional Court after the Vake-Saburtalo District Court has sentenced Rustam Anzorov to 3 months pre-detention.

Chochishvili states that the Vake-Saburtalo District Court prevented the case from being taken to the Regional Court for no apparent reason. Furthermore, is appears the Georgian government is likely to extradite the defendant to Russia.

At present Rustam Anzorov is in Tbilisi Prison #1. It should be mentioned that 2 more Chechen refugees, Adam Baisuev and Islam Donaev, had been detained together with him, but were soon released.
