Number of Judges to Be Reduced by Half

Media News. A new phase in reforming the court system will begin on September 20. According to a decree issued by the president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, the present number of 70 courts existing in Georgia will be reduced to 24 regional courts. The number of judges, outnumbering 300 today, will also be diminished.

As the agency Media News has been informed by the Supreme Council of Justice, the dismissed judges will be considered in reserve. However, the Council does not elaborate on the principles to be applied in the selection process.

President Saakashvili issued the decree, regarding the unification of courts on August 24.  2-3 regional courts will be fused into one,  following the example of the prosecutor’s offices’ amalgamation.

According to the statement made by the Supreme Council of Justice, a conception has already been worked out concerning court governing and the reform of remedial legislation.
