Railway Blocked in Gardabani

Railway Blocked in Gardabani

Gardabani. 22.09.04. Media News. Azeri inhabitants of Gardabani district of Georgia blocked the railway of Gardabani-Jandara to voice protest.
According to a statement by Telman Gasanov, former deputy governor of Gardabani district and one of the organizers of the protest, corruption is running high in Kvemo Kartli even after the Rose Revolution as positions continue to be staffed by officials, who had been accused of corruption.

The protesters claim that the presidential representative, Ioseb Mazmishvili, the governor of Gardabani, Davit Nadashvili, as well as other high-ranking officials do not take the necessary steps to improve the situation in the region.

In addition to that, discrimination is a serious issue. So far, only Georgians are employed by the local self-government, whilst Azeris have been excluded from the sector.

Gasanov summarizes the aim of the protest as follows: "We will not open the railway if our concerns are not taken into account and if the violations of our rights are not stopped. I possess all necessary material about those officials involved in corruption".
