“The Ministry of Justice does not Make Facts of Prisoners’ Death Known to the Public”

Tbilisi.18.10.04. Media News. On October 17 Vladimer Gujejiani, who had been tried for illegal keeping of drug substance, died in the Jail Republic Hospital.

According to the information of Nana Kakabadze, the Head of the NGO “Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights” Gujejiani was ill with Gangrene and the disease was practically spread all over his body.

Nana Kakabdze said that mediatory activities to release Gujejiani had been carried out several times with the Ministry of Justice and the Penitentiaries but the mediations were not met.

As Kakabadze states there have been about 10 facts of the prisoners’ death in the penitentiaries lately, though the Ministry of Justice does not reveal the facts intentionally.

“A few days ago a prisoner hanged himself in the Ksani Colony, though the public has not been informed about it. The administration of the Jail and other relevant official bodies not only not voice the facts but they do not even give a consequent reaction”,- stated Nana Kakabadze.
