Georgian Sailors in Greek Prison for Ten Months


Media News. Mikheil Machavariani, Vice-speaker of parliament and Elene Tevdoradze, chairwoman of the human rights’ defense and civil integration committee charge the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with  “erroneous working.”

The case involves the ship “Iavnana,” taken into custody in the vicinity of Greek waters on January 14, 2004 and its sailors who have been detqained. As Elene Tevdoradze stated at a plenary session on November 9, the seamen have been detained in violation of all procedures and are being held in unbearable conditions in the prison of the town of Kholkid.

Revaz Antia, one of the six detainees died in April. State of the rest five prisoners is disturbing.
Elene Tevdoradze pointed out, that the detained sailors had managed to ring up their own relatives and the Consulate of Georgia in Greece, but they have not reacted to this fact.

According to Elene Tevdoradze, wives of the detained seamen have applied to her in written form and asked for help.
