Mikheil Saakashvili Meets NGOs

Tbilisi.17.11.04.Media News. At a meeting of President Mikheil Saakashvili and Non Governmental Organizations questions of human rights defense, the confrontation in the Orthodox Church and restrictions of press freedom in mass media have been discussed.

After the three-hour meeting the representatives of the NGOs stated that the facts of restriction of freedom of the TV Companies were not known to the president and he expressed his wish to receive concrete information on this issue from the NGO sector. The president emphasized the confrontation existing in the Orthodox Church and noted that the Georgian Church is independent from the state and asked the mass media to be more careful when covering these kinds of problems.

It was decided at the meeting that the president would cooperate with the third sector on a regular basis and NGOs would give him information on “undesirable activities” of representatives of the government. Representatives of NGOs express hope that the president will have an adequate reaction to the problems that will be raised by them.
