Walls Painted by the Justice Minister Broke Down

Tbilisi.16.11.04.Media News. Nana Kakabadze, the leader of NGO “Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights” stated that the country is being ruled by PR now; consequently the situation is getting even worse what is particularly reflected on the penitentiary system.

“Developing of mortgaging institute has not been managed yet; this would decrease sentencing people to pre-detention. What is going on in Georgia is not the mortgaging institute but a real racket. The number of prisoners has increased and I can tell you that the pre-detention isolators are stuffed with detainees. 60 people instead of 13 are placed there. Because of these conditions people there are in conditions of torture. The corruption has even more increased; the amount of “set prices” has been catastrophically raised. The Ministry of Justice does not pay any attention to this situation and we are not able to provide evidence due to the fact that we are not allowed in prisons. Even if we were allowed into the prison it would be still difficult to find evidence because the situation is profitable for both bribers and for the persons who take the bribes. 60 people are placed in the cell which is considered for only 13 persons and they are obliged to ask the supervisor to open the door of the cell. The supervisor knows that it is the violation of the law, so it should be worth doing for him, he must get money instead”. – states Nana Kakabadze

The leader of “Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights” considers that worsening of the prisoners’ conditions in prisons is adequately reflected on the society. “You can’t even imagine what the family members of the prisoners are suffering and the Ministry of Justice instead of painting the walls should build the walls which broke down during this painting process” – said Nana Kakabadze to Media News.

According to her if the Ministry keeps work in the same manner it will not be able to build promised prisons even in five years’ time.
