Trial of Georgian Sailors Postponed

Tbilisi.16.11.04.Media News. The Greek Court postponed the trial of the Georgian sailors till January 25 for lack of satisfactory.

The Ship “Iavnana” was taken into custody in the vicinity of Greek waters on January 14, 2004 and its sailors were taken to the prison in Kholkid. The seamen are charged with illegally transporting migrants.

Revaz Antia, one of the six detainees died in April. The state of the remaining five prisoners is apalling.

The detained sailors had managed to ring up their own relatives and the Consulate of Georgia in Greece, but the Consulate hasn’t reacted yet.
According to Sandro Chumburidze, Ambassador of Georgia to Greece, it is not before the court has pronounced its verdict with regard to the five seamen that Georgia will ask Greece to extradite the prisoners to Georgia.

A state attorney and a private attorney that has been hired by the sailors will defend their interests.
