New Motive For Assassination of Journalist Giorgi Sanaia

Tbilisi.24.11.04.Media News. On November 24, the Criminal Appeals Department of the Supreme Court discussed the appeal of Giorgi Sanaia’s widow. The declaration of the Court’s decision is expected on December 3.

Not only does Rhatuna Chkhaidze, Giorgi Sanaia’s widow, demand another investigation of the case, she also calls for the identification of the person who ordered the convict Giorgi Khurtsilava to assassinate her husband.

Khurtsilava’s attorney, on the other hand, has asked the Court to lower the 13 year sentence as he is convinced his defendant had been acting in affect at the time.

In June 2004, Tbilisi Gldani-Nadzaladevi District Court had sentenced Giorgi Khurtsilava to 13 years imprisonment. Later, on July 30, the Regional Court confirmed the verdict but specified the victim’s attempt to sexually harass the accused to be the motive for the assassination.
