President Pardons up to 90 Prisoners

Tbilisi.24.11.04.Media News. On the occasion of the anniversary of the Rose Revolution, the Georgian president was to pardon 120 prisoners, among them women and juvenile prisoners as well as old prisoners.

According to Nana Kakabadze, head of the NGO “Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights”, the president has pardoned 90 prisoners. One of the prisoners died just a few hours after his release.

Nana Kakabadze believes that the Presidents pardon should not have been restricted to those who should have been released by virute of ill health anyway. Rather, she expressed disappointment that those who deserved it on other grounds had not been pardoned.

MP Elene Tevdoradze says that the president signed only that part of the amnesty, which considered women prisoners.

“According to my information two prisoners have died; for this reason I wanted to speed up the process of signing the amnesty though the president took another decision. I know the names of the deceased people but I am not going topublicise them. I think it will be difficult for their families to hear that” – stated Elene Tevdoradze in an interview with Media News.
