Diabetes Patients Deprived of Medicine

Tbilisi.23.11.04.Media News. There are 48 200 people suffering from diabetes mellitus in Georgia. 14 279 of which are younger than 40 years of age and 33 921 over 40.

According to Mikheil Elizbarashvili, president of the Non Governmental Union “Diabetikon” patients suffering from the second type of diabetes are in particularly dire conditions as the Georgian Ministry of Health does not import adequate medicine.

“At present only insulin is being brought into Georgia which is used by patients of the first type of diabetes, but nothing is being done for those patients of the second type” – stated Mikheil Elizbarashvili in an interview with Media News.

In a comparison to patients in other countries, Elizbarashvili stated that patients abroad benefit from a state financed check up every two years. In Georgia on the other hand no such services is provided at all.
