Increased Facts of Beating Detainees

Tbilisi, Media News. The Liberty Institute blames the police for human rights violations including the beating and torturing of detainees.
Members of the Liberty Institute held a press conference regarding the issue. Representatives of the Interior Ministry, Public Defender’s Office and General Prosecution attended the press conference.

According to NGOs, there are 33 prisoners with bodily injuries in N1 Prison. 14 of them came forward with descriptions of how they were pressured by police during detention.  There are 8 prisoners with bodily injuries in Kutaisi N2 Prison.

“About 200 persons have been observed with bodily injuries in Tbilisi in January, 2005. The General Prosecutor’s Office has been sent all the documentation and materials describing the conditions under which the persons were injured. However, the Prosecutor’s Office has not yet detained anyone regarding these facts,” stated Bacho Akhalaia, Deputy Public Defender.

As Thea Tutberidze, member of Liberty Institute, says, according to penitentiary information, 21 persons were placed in prisons with bodily injuries in December, 2004 but this number does not reflect the real situation since 92 persons with the same injuries were placed in N1 Prison alone.
Human rights defenders demand charges be brought for disseminating misinformation.
