250 Cases will be Closed Due to Financial Amnesty

Tbilisi, 1/25/05, Media News. Financial amnesty went into effect January 25, resulting in the closing of about 250 criminal cases.

According to Kakha Koberdize, Deputy Prosecutor General, the majority of these cases are in the pre-investigation phase and some of them have already been sent to court.

He also said that first person to be released on amnesty had been sentenced to pre-detention for committing business-related crimes.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not issue surnames of those receiving amnesty. As Deputy Prosecutor General stated, some of the detainees might not plead guilty and may still refuse to make use of financial amnesty and demand their cases be thoroughly investigated.

He said that certain procedures still remain before many people on the list can be released. Despite that, however, amnesty will be implemented as quickly as possible.

According to the law, financial amnesty can be considered for private bodies and companies who have already corrected their infractions--concealed income, illegal enterprises, etc.

The Georgian parliament adopted the law on financial amnesty a few days before the New Year and the president signed it into law on January 24.
