A New Jail for Women Prisoners Established

Tbilisi, 02.08.05, Media News. On Abusaridze St., Tbilisi, a new jail has been established which complies with European standards. The jail is built for 12 prisoners and the cells are structured for 4-6 persons.

The new jail is equipped with showers and a modern heating system.  Prisoners will have an opportunity to receive medical and psychological assistance there.
The prison will be used for pre-detention and women prisoners from Ortachala Prison will be brought here in two or three days.

“The prison is a novelty for the entire region; it provides all the accommodations for prisoners to feel themselves treated like human beings,” stated Giorgi Papuashvili, Minister of Justice.

According to Papuashvili, the construction of a jail for juvenile prisoners will also begin in the same territory and prisoners will be brought to this new prison from Ortachala Prison, which has a very old infrastructure.

The Minister also said that a renovation of Rustavi Prison is planned for the near future and will be financed by the European Commission.  Construction of a new prison in Kutaisi, with plans to hold 1500 prisoners, will be finished in a few months.

The minister said that in about a year and a half the situation will be much improved for all prisons.
