Zurab Chankotadze’s Attorney plans to Appeal to the European Court of Human Rights

Tbilisi.02.23.05.Media News. Zurab Chankotadze’s attorney, Gocha Svanidze, plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg if the Courts of Georgia do not consider his demands to release the former head of the Civil Aviation Administration from pre-detention.

At a press conference held on February 23, 2005, Svanidze stated that “Zurab Chankotadze was detained on March 16, 2004. He still remains in pre-detention. The investigation ended on August 31, 2004. On September 20 the case was sent to Vake-Saburtalo District Court. However, the case has not taken legal proceedings in this court yet.”

The Public Defender has studied Chankotadze’s case and considered it to be a human rights violation. He has written to the District Court to put an end to Chankotadze’s illegal detention. The Public Defender’s letter has not been followed by any reaction on the part of the court.
