Registration of NGOs in Competence of the Ministry of Justice

Tbilisi.03.02.05.Media News. Proceeding from the amendments made in the Georgian Constitution the registration of non-profit legal bodies of the private law - unions (associations) and their branches (representations; the so called NGOs) has become the competence of the Georgian Ministry of Justice since March 1, 2005. From now on the registration will be made by the local registration departments of the Ministry of Justice instead of the courts.

According to Giorgi Gogiberidze, Head of State Registration and Licensing Department of the Ministry of Justice the above-mentioned organizations will be registered by 10 Regional State Registration Services of the Ministry of Justice and they will ensure registration according to their location considering the location (legal address) of the to-be registered organization.  The registration of the Tbilisi based organizations will be done in the Ministry of Justice.

As a result of the made amendments the term established for the registration of unions and foundations will be made shorter; Earlier the term was defined with one month, now it is 15 days.
Besides the establishment of the new registration system it is also important to create the database of the registered organizations in order to make it available for any interested person to receive comprehensive information in just short period of time about the non-profit legal bodies of the private law.

Until now the Ministry of Justice was only entitled to register foundations, parties and art unions.
