Conference Focuses on Torture of Detainees

Tbilisi.03.05.16. Media News. A conference financed by European Union will be held from the 19th to the 23rd of March in Gudauri. The topic of the conference will be on the “Problem of Detainee Torture in Georgia”.

Human rights NGOs from Georgia and the European Union, as well as representatives of media, advocacy, penitentiary system and law enforcement bodies, will participate in the conference.

Various issues will be discussed at the conference in relation to the human rights situation in Georgia in 2004, including changes in legislation, reforms taking place in the Ministry of the Interior, Prosecutor’s Office and penitentiaries, problems related to the independence of court and media, the role of advocacy, prisoners’ rights, and concrete cases about drugs and guns being planted on suspects by police.

At the end of the conference a coalition for the protection of civil rights will be established, which will unite Non Governmental Organizations and experts working in the field of human rights.

Literature on the human rights situation in Georgia will also be distributed among the participants of the conference.
