Passport Processing to be Reduced to Five Working Days

Tbilisi.15.04.05. The Ministry of Justice has begun an anti-corruption campaign in the Department for Registration and Passports.

The Deputy Minister of Justice, Konstantine Varshalomidze, presented an anti-corruption informational community announcement on April 15.

“Citizens are uninformed about their rights,” stated Varshalomidze. “Because of this they have often become the victims of corruption.”

The community announcement outlined the specific procedures that citizens should go through to receive a passport.

According to Varshalomidze, the duty for a passport is 2.50 GEL, and citizens should pay a total of 35 GEL for their passport.

The Ministry of Justice has also made another important step towards the elimination of corruption by increasing the salaries of the Registration and Passport Department staff by four to five times what it was.

The deadline for issuing passports to pensioners has been extended from May 1 to July 1.

Under the decision made by the Ministry of Justice, additional stations for citizens to register have also been opened.

Varshalomidze also mentioned that the Ministry of Justice has elaborated on the draft that envisions issuing passports to unprotected layers of society free of charge.
