The UN High Commissioner for Refugees to Continue Support of Internally Displaced People

13/10/05, “Media News” - Georgian Minister for Refugees and Resettlement Eter Astemirova spoke about the rights of internally displaced people and refugees during her recent visit to Geneva. She delivered a speech at the 56th session, organized by the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. She spoke about the severe social-economic situation of the internally displaced people.

“We discussed the cases of internally displaced people from Abkhazia and South Osethia, as well as from Chechnya and Meskheti. I have asked the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and international community to raise the amount of humanitarian aid sent to these regions. I am very glad, that my request was considered and working on these issues are already on the way,”- said the Minister for Refugees and Resettlement.

Eter Astemirova also talked about the group of people, deported from Meskheti. According to minister, the state commission is studying their cases in Middle Asian countries, where they were sent. 

“The rights of the deported people must be protected in the country, where they live now. Every of them should be given the citizenship and thus gain the freedom of movement and freedom of choice,”- said Astemirova on press conference.
