Sick Prisoners to Be Treated in Hospital №5

20/10/05, “Media News” – The Minister of Justice Konstantine Kemularia and the Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs Lado Chipashvili, visited the departments of Hospital №5 where sick prisoners will be treated soon.

According to Kemularia, specialists of the Penitential Department are discussing a new expansion plan of 800 m2. 40-50 prisoners will be given medical treatment in this hospital. Chipashvili said that the medical department will fall under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.

A prisoner, suffering from heart problems, was refused medical treatment by the officials of several of Tbilisi’s hospitals.

Evgeni Shervashidze, 56, was taken to the medical center of the penitentiary early on Thursday. After the diagnosis, it became clear that he was in need of medical survey and treatment in a specialized clinic, but for different reasons he was refused by the officials of several hospitals.

According to the Justice Minister, Kote Kemularia, such facts occur frequently. The prisoner was first taken to the National Center of Neurology where, because of no electricity, he could not be helped. Other hospitals did not have the necessary equipment and in the last one no vacant place was found.
The problem was solved only after the officials of the Republican Hospital agreed to provide treatment to Evgeni Shervashidze on Thursday.

The Justice Minister expects that such problems will be solved only after the new department in Tbilisi’s Hospital No 5 is opened.
