02/11/05, “Media News” – Tbilisi will host the OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension  Meeting (SHDM) from the 3rd to the 4th November. The main topic of the meeting is “The Role of Defence Lawyers in Guaranteeing a Fair Trial”.  More than 55 delegates from the OSCE member countries and representatives of NGOs will attend the meeting.

Three issues will be discussed during the meeting: accessibility of legal consultations, rules regulating the legal profession and the equality of sides in criminal procedure.

Christian Stroehall, director of the OSCE Organization of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), arrived in Tbilisi today to take part in the forum. Apart from this, he will meet representatives of the Georgian government.

The ODIHR main office is located in Warsaw, where the annual Human Dimension Meeting is usually held. As for the Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting on the Role of Defence Lawyers in Guaranteeing a Fair Trial, it is organized in Georgia for the first time, which can serve as an indication of OCSE’s interest in the country’s democratic processes.
