Public Defender’s Office Started Monitoring Mental Hospitals

Tbilisi. Media News. 11.11.05. The Public Defender’s Office, in cooperation with several Georgian NGOs, started the monitoring of mental hospitals.

A commission consisting of 15 persons will at first check the mental hospital in Gldani. Ana Zhvani, head of the Information and Education department of the Public Defender, says this is a pilot program.

A special questionnaire has been put together with the support of the NGO ‘Liberty Institute’ and the European Union. The questionnaires shall be handed over to those present in the hospital. Four categories exist: the administration, physicians, nurses and patients. After assessing the answers, the commission shall write a report”- said Ana Zhvania.

She mentioned that after the pilot program would be finished in a week, they will go on to check all mental hospitals that are in the regions as well.

“Along with the report, the commission will prepare an advertising poster, which is to address all violations found to exist in the hospital”- stated Ana Zhvania.
