Public Organizations File Complaints against Four TV Companies

On December the 9th the Georgian National Communications Commission (GNCC) will review the complaint lodged by public organizations against four Georgian TV channels. The organizations accuse the TV companies of violating the Law ‘On Protecting Minors from Bad Influence’. According to GNCC, these organizations believe that TV stations “Mze”, “Imedi”, “Rustavi 2” and “Tbilisi” broadcast programs that have a bad influence over adolescents.
The accuse mentions “Imedi’s” TV magazine “Droeba’s Promo”, which showed people taking drugs, “Rustavi 2’s” reality show “Geobar”, “Serial Killer” series, promos for the films “Waiting for the Flood”, “Playing God” as well as promos for films “The Fuss” and “You Stupid Man” shown by TV station “Mze”.

As for TV company “Tbilisi” (which re-broadcasts the Russian ORT), it demonstrated phone sex numbers in its running title.
The GNCC will finish the assessment of the complaint on December 16th. The Commission also needs to discuss the report drawn up by the Department of Youth Affairs.

The authors of the complaint are the “Union of Orthodox Parents”, “Saint King David” and “Union of Ilya Chavchavadze Pedagogues”. According to the representative of the “Union of Orthodox Parents” Avtandil Ungiadze, the mentioned law provides for monetary fines, a 3% deduction of income and the suspension of license for the aforementioned violations. He also said that they may even bring the case to court.
