Georgian Young Lawyers Association Protests against the Consequences of Special Operations

Tbilisi, 17.02.2006, “Media News” – The Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) is concerned about the so called ‘special operation’ on Ninoshvili street, in which George Telia was killed. “According to Georgian Legislation, executions are now prohibited, but still 4 people were killed during special operations in 2006,” the GYLA is said in their statement.

“Human execution is the most severe penalty. It is forbidden to execute people without any investigation or court decision. Unfortunately, cases such as this create a culture of impunity among police officers. The killing of people during ‘special operations’ destroys the ideal of presumption of innocence and the rule of law,” the statement went on to declare.

The Georgian Young Lawyers Association supports the fight against crime and criminals, but is against the killings. The GYLA calls upon the General Prosecutor’s Office to react and investigate these increasing incidents of violence.
