Abkhazians Have Become Active in Gali Region

During last two days, in so called ‘low zone’ villages of the Gali region, the Abkhazian police have been holding raids with pretence of seeking Georgian Criminals. The armed masked men enter the homes of peaceful inhabitants without any forewarning and hold inquisitions. Yesterday in the villages of Gagida, Tsarche and Papashghali, the Abkhazian police detained four Georgians who were considered ‘suspicious’. The detainees were released the next morning. According to the detainees, they had spent the whole night in the Gali police station and the policemen who held the interrogation demanded they testify to the existence of criminal groups in the villages. As the inhabitants of the region say, the Abkhazians are implementing "cleaning up" operations in several villages at once and these are particularly aggressive.
