Ucha Nanuashvili: Government Tries to Hide Girgvliani’s Murder Investigation from Public View

Tbilisi, 02.05.06 ‘Media News’ – The Executive Director of the non-governmental organization The Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre, Ucha Nanuashvili, accused the government of hiding details of the investigation of the Girgvliani murder case from the public. “I am more than sure that the government will try to press Girgvliani’s family, as well as every organization that tries to find out the truth about his death. The fact that the government offered money to Girgvliani’s family for keeping silent is part of the whole campaign. Of course the investigation is not independent. The fact that the government wants to ‘buy out’ Girgvliani’s family, means that the state wants us to ‘forget’ this happened,” says Nanuashvili.

Nanuashvili believes that the General Prosecutor’s Office must reply to the comments made by Irina Enukidze - the mother of murdered Sandro Girgvliani. According to the mother, the government offered her a financial deal.

“It is ridiculous, how the General Prosecutor declares that no deal was made between Girgvliani’s family and the government, without conducting an investigation. I would think that the General Prosecutor’s Office should be the first people interested in investigating this case”, added Nanuashvili.
