Police Beat Badri Kvikvinia

Police Beat Badri Kvikvinia

On May 26th, in Zugdidi like in other Georgian towns, there were concerts celebrating independence day, but whilst the celebrations were taking place, police were beating Badri Kvikvinia near the Zugdidi railway station.

According to the victim, police officers detained him for no reason and then beat them: “I needed to give some money to my relative. Someone told me that he was at the station. When I went there I asked some policemen where he was and they told that he was there. As soon as I entered the room, three policemen came in and started beating me without any explanation. They verbally abused me as well. They probably got annoyed because I was drunk.”

Kvikvinia does not deny that he was drunk, although according to information from an eye-witness, he did not act abusively towards the policemen.

After his beating, Kvikvinia spent the whole night outside the station. He cannot understand the reason why he was attacked. He doubts he will ever know as he cannot identify the perpetrators.

We tried in vain to find out the identities of the policemen on duty at the railway station on May 26th, but every person demanding such information is simply referred to the press-service of the Ministry of Interior.
