Public Defender Demands Georgian Officials Punished for Incident in Tskhinvali Region

Tbilisi. 31.05.06. Media News. The Public Defender Sozar Subari published a report on the incident that took place on May 27th-28th in the Tskhinvali region. In the report he states that the acts of representatives of the Georgian government, particularly the police, against the Ossetians that took place on those dates can be defined as torture. These acts must be condemned and all the cases of illegal detainment, beating and torture must be investigated.  According to Sozar Subari, not only those who carried out the acts should be punished, but also those who planned and organized the operation.

The Public Defender and the State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues, Giorgi Khaindrava, traveled to the Tskhinvali region on the 29th May in order to study the incident that occurred in the conflict zone.

The Public Defender met five of the detainees who were beaten: Felix Tuaev, Eduard Tedeev, Mairbeg Gagiev, Pavlik Dozugov and Ruslan Kusraev. Each of them told the Ombudsman that the local police officers did not participate in their detention, but only members of the ‘Special Forces’ unit, in masks and uniforms, who came from Tbilisi. “The population of the villages of Didi Liakhvi and in the Prone Gorge view this action by the Georgian police as a provocation against peaceful coexistence and against the local population”, states the Ombudsman.
Today the Public Defender of Georgia submitted all the materials he gathered to the Office of the Prosecutor- General for further investigation.
