Prosecutor Dismissed For Stalling Investigation

The fact that the rights of eye-witness are not protected in Georgia has once more been underlined by Liana Chanchliashvili’s case, whose health is now in a terrible condition. The Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre hosted a press-conference about her case. The 66 year old lady was tortured and beaten up by her young neighbors after she told the police about a murder that took place in front of her house.

Liana Chanchliashvili pleaded for help to Human Rights Defenders, after several unsuccessful attempts to receive help from the local and regional police. Chanchliashvili’s fight for her rights then became even more dramatic – after the attack, doctors diagnosed her with cancer.

According to Ucha Nanuashvili, Executive Director of the Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre, law enforcers did almost nothing to punish the criminals. “Levan Shashiashvili, the Head of Akhmeta Police and whole department are doing nothing to help the victim and punish the criminals; on the contrary he himself has been involved in several threats and blackmail attempts against the victim”, says Nanuashvili.

According to information from the Human Rights Centre, Valeri Mosiashvili, a Prosecutor from the Kakheti Regional Prosecutor’s Office, was dismissed after the press-conference. Mosiashvili was responsible for the investigation of the case.
