Nine Hundred Georgian Citizens Have Illegal Status of Chechen Refugees

Tbilisi, 10.07.06, ‘Media News’ – The Department of Refugee Migration and Repatriation of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation finished registration of Chechen refugees, living in Akhmeta district. According to the new data 1500 citizens of Chechnya (Russia) live in this region.

According to Irakli Kokaia, the head of the Department of Refugee Migration and Repatriation, the registration process will continue in the Ministry. He thinks that 1900 Chechen refugees live in Georgia.

“It is important to have the exact number of refugees living on our territory. Unfortunately, some Georgian citizens illegally use the status of Chechen refugees and receive international aid from different organizations. Illegal status was taken away from more then nine hundred Georgian citizens. And will probably happen with another hundred,” declares Kokaia.

The registration of refugees will be finished in September.
