Irakli Batiashvili - another political prisoner in Georgia

August 1, 2006

Irakli Batiashvili -  another political prisoner in Georgia
(Even Communists did not arrest people this way!)

We - political prisoners of soviet period, clearly understand purpose and all reasons which caused imprisonment of Mr. Irakli Batiashvili - former member of Parliament,  well-known political figure, one of the leaders of the National Movement. Mr. Batiashvili  was charged  for “high treason”. These reasons and  purposes are similar to those which previous Soviet regime used to  fabricate to arrest us.

With the “Bolshevik Pathos” Government takes Georgian society to task. Our Authorities do their best to convince society that Irakli Batiashvili is a  parricide. Government inevitably sticks a label of  “National Enemy” and “Parricide” on those people who disobey methods of Neo-Bolshevik  propaganda. That’s how Infantile Leaders of Georgian Government understand Human Rights and Democracy.

Irakli Batiashvili was arrested not for the specific criminal act, but for telephone conversation with Emzar Kvitsiani (person who rose in rebellion against Government) and for open expression of his own opinion.

For recent years Revolutionary Government  arrested number of people for their political allegiance, though in many cases Government offered some arguments (lame or week but still arguments), that these people were arrested for criminal reasons and not for the political ones.

In particular case of Irakli Batiashvili Authorities even theoretically could not offer convincing proof of his connection with organized delinquency.

Bolshevik Government used to persecute and punish soviet and sometimes world-famous intellectuals – scientists, writers, poets, directors and other professionals whose opinion and statements supported “ideology” of “Social Enemies” and “Imperial Agents”. Though we must admit that Communists considered necessary to adduce even  lame and fabricated evidence of fault!
When people are deceived with pseudo-patriotic slogans, when intellectuals “Endanger Unity of Party and Society”, serious talking about human rights protection and  standards of international law  is  naïve and cynical.

To consider all above mentioned we can say that, final harbor of patriots like Irakli Batiashvili is Prison and that number of political prisoners  in Georgia will increase dramatically in the future.

The purpose of Irakli Batiashvil’s  imprisonment is to frighten society, prohibit  freedom of speech, oppress political opponents, It shows that Government violates basic human rights and does its best to maintain power even by force. We must admit that, during the soviet regime, communists  used to arrest Us - former political prisoners for similar reasons.

We call for  people of free will, human rights defenders all over the world, please use every possibility to release Irakli Batiashvili - Political Prisoner of twenty first century.
