There are Frequent Occasions of Children’s Family Violence Facts in Georgia

Tbilisi. 03.08.06. Media News. Specialists of the UNICEF have published output of their International Research on Family Violence. As shown by the experts’ information, 275 Million children are either victims or witnesses to family violence. According to Ucha Nanuashvili, Executive Director of Georgia based NGO ‘Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre’ there is no statistic data on the problem in Georgia, though there are quite frequent occasions of children’s family violence here.

As Nanuashvili defines, the victim of the violence is not interested in making the problem public, as they have no hope of the law enforcement bodies to react on it properly. The victim knows beforehand that his rights would not be protected and neither guilty would be punished. Mistrust to the law-enforcement Bodies causes hushing up the family violence facts.

As Ucha Nanuashvili states, the victim trusts the NGOs and Public Defender more than the Law Enforcement Bodies and mostly they apply to them.

Besides that, as shown by his statement, there is no law in Georgia protecting the victims of family violence. ‘Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre’ is implementing a project ‘Support to the Reform of Juvenile Justice Administration in Georgia’ with UNICEF. In the framework of the project recommendation parcel to Georgian Parliament was drawn out, which includes the demand on adoption of suitable law.

Nowadays neither confidential nor hot line phone number exists for family violence victim adults in Georgia. Family violence tells badly on both child and adult’s mental and emotional development. As Nanuashvili considers, juridical or psychological support of such violence victims, must be more coordinative and Special Asylum or Critical Aid Centre should be established in the country.
