Epidemics Is Ranging In the Village of Uplistsikhe

August 29, 2006

August, 29. 2006. Gori. Children in the village of Uplistsikhe are being poisoned. Parents of four-year-old Gvantsa Kruashvili stated that the child had been poisoned by polluted water and hair. She had high temperature and stomach-ache. Some people managed and sent their children from the village. The rest of the residents face the same danger.

Ten communal block of flat with eight families each are located in Uplistsikhe. They have common sewerage system, now being out of order. Subsequently the faecal masses are coming up on the surface and fills surrounding gardens and water wells. In summer it smells terribly for heat. A first symptom for disease among children is sore-throat.

Deputy Governor, Mr. Gela Zoziashvili replied the people on their petition to Shida Kartli Governor, Mikheil Kareli in May as follows: “Having discussed your petition together with Gori District Governor and Kvakhvreli Community Councilor, we inform you that the facts in your appeal are true and the sewerage system should be replaced. However, having funds neither in the Community nor in the Gori Region Administrative Board, the petition is under control and you should be assisted as soon as the funds are located.”-Gela Zoziashvili wrote.

People in Uplistsikhe were waiting for the funds since May, but the Local Authority appeared in the village on August 20 ready to paint the gates of their houses and not to replace the sewerage system. Officials from Administrative Board stated: “Condoleezza Rice is going to pass here and meet her with nice yards.”

As we have found out the dust from the local military foundation will stay in the village. Soldiers have their sewerage system in order inside the camp, but the water draining from the system reach houses and gardens of the local people, who now hope the President will pay attention to them.
