Boarder Guard Arrests Suspected Muslim Finnish Spy

August 31, 2006

Tbilisi, 31.08.2006, ‘Media News’ – On the 28th of August, near the Russian-Georgian boarder Georgian Boarder Guards arrested a Muslim Finnish man, who was accused of spying.

Citizen of Finland, Abu Baker Heikila, arrived in Georgia on the 25th of August. He went in the direction of Kazbeghi the same day and registered as a tourist with the department of boarder police ‘Juta’.

Police found his nationality and looks suspicious, however they could not find any signs of falsification in his passport and let him in. Despite this, the head of the Boarder Guard took the journey of Finnish citizen under his supervision.

On the 26-27th of August, he was noticed near the site of the ‘Archoti’ guard-post (this territory borders with Ingusheti). The ‘tourist’ was behaving suspiciously and did not seem to go and visit Shatili. According to the boarder guards, he seemed to be waiting for someone and roaming the territory. The Finn was arrested when he tried to run away, when the guards approached him.

According to unofficial information, he changed his name after changing religion. He probably tried to illegally cross the Russian-Georgian boarder. Suspicious things, like maps of the North Caucasus, a knife and binoculars were discovered in his bag. After conducting an investigation, the citizen of Finland was transferred to the Antiterrorist Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
