Beaten Detainee in Zugdidi Jail

September 27, 2006

Beaten detainee is placed in Zugdidi #4 jail within Detention Department. Vakhtang Gogisvanidze, the professor at Kutaisi Ak.Tsereteli University was born in 1970 and lives in Kutaisi. He was arrested in Poti. He is accused for drug-abusing and its criminal possession. It became clear quite by accident that V. Gogisvanidze was severely beaten. He has numerous bruises on different parts of the body, as well as a serious trauma inside his scull and the nose broken. The detainee was examined by both therapist and traumatologist; however the prison administration has not taken him to the hospital. Gogisvanidze was visited by Bagrat Kiria, coordinator for the Public Defender’s Office in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti. His interference made it possible to examine Gogisvanidze properly. At present his health is out of danger. According to Gogisvanidze, Poti Police Department officials injured him during detention. The policemen tried to plant a drug on him and he was resisting. The detainee categorically denies the fact of keeping ‘Heroin’.
The law enforcement officials do not comment the fact as usually.
