Situation Is Tense in Georgian-Abkhazian Conflict Zone

October 2, 2006

On the 31st September Abkhazian Self-proclaimed Government is celebrating the thirteenth anniversary of their victory. The Abkhazians have started preparation for this event for a long time. They initially fortified border line along the River Enguri. They have introduced additional forces of so-called frontier guards; they have dug trenches and set up searchlights.
Every year the Abkhazians are seriously aided by Russian peace-keepers in organizing the frontier guarding (and in some other fields as well). Neither this year has been an exception.
Four armored transports of Russian peace-keeping forces with full equipment are patrolling in the villages of Gali district. However they have no legal rights for acting thus, as it is 12 kilometer-long security zone. And everybody knows the real reason of their increased activities. The Russians help the Abkhazians to celebrate the anniversary peacefully.

Russian military forces are moving around Zugdidi district by their military vehicles. However it must be noted that they are more corrective and careful on another bank of the Enguri. As for Gali district the people say that Russians pay attention to everything and everybody who travels around in this district and send the information straight to Sukhumi.

Besides aforementioned facts, the people in Gali noticed some Russians dressed in civil forms. They say these people have appeared here for already two days. The fact caused a serious concern as Gali district Georgian population thinks that their appearance deals with the detention of Russian Spy network members by the Georgian Special Forces and thus it might cause problems.
