October 9, 2006

Tbilisi. 09.10. 06. Media News. Prisoners’ Rights Office has been created within Detention Department. It will focus on defending the detainee’s rights and improving their living conditions in prison. The new department was staffed by the specialists experienced at the Public Defender’s Office.

As Bacho Akhalaia, the Head of the Detention Department stated at the briefing today, the new stage has stated in their department having created a new office.

“The new office has been staffed with those specialists who used to work at the Public Defender’s Office before-said Bacho Akhalaia-We have made such decision only for one reason-they have serious experience and have worked with the prisoners for years. It is clear to them that serious decisions can be made and the situation can be improved not by Postfactum and criticizing other’s mistakes but by involving the process itself. We give these people a chance to improve what is to be changed.”

Hot Line has begun to work in the Prisoners’ Rights Office. The phone number is: 75 22 69
