“Egalitarian Institute” Is Going to Defend the Citizen Who Was Interrogated at the Special Operation Department (SOD)

January 30, 2007

Representatives of the NGO “Egalitarian Institute” spread information that Ilia Ghvinadze, the head of the Service Center against Trafficking of the Special Operation Department (SOD) within the Georgian Interior Ministry threatened Nanuli Kufaradze to death.

Member of the Egalitarian Institute Jaba Jishkariani said in his conversation with the Media News that on March 21 2006, certain Nino Ruadze and Babula Sefiashvili sent Nanuli Kufaradze’s husband to Turkey. The man was trafficked in Turkey instead of getting employed. “According to the initial agreement, Kufaradze’s husband was to plant saplings in Turkey for some money. However, having arrived in Turkey he was ordered to do much more difficult job and without any payment,” said Jishkariani.

Thus, Kufaradze demanded to detain Ruadze and Sefiashvili. Ghvinadze was put in charge of investigating the case. “Both Ruadze and Sefiashvili are relatives of Mamuka Jafaridze, a high ranking official. Consequently Ghvinadze did not launch investigation on the case. He threatened Kufradze to death unless she kept silence. Afterwards, the victim appealed to the Georgian Prosecutor General, Zurab Adeishvili, in vain too. Today, Kufaradze was interrogated at the SOD and we want to support her in any cases. We will make the investigation carried out unbiased,” said Jishkariani.
