Demonstrators Demanded Gas Supply in Gurjaani

February 16, 2007

In Gurjaani, residents of April 9 Street held a demonstration and demanded to supply them with gas. They said that they have not been supplied with the gas for two months already. Representatives of the local Authority tried to force the demonstrators to cease the protest demonstration.

“We have not been supplied with gas for two months already. Nobody explains us the reason. They pretend to do something, but we do not know when the gas will be supplied to us again. We have spent the winter in cold. We are forced to go out in the street and hold demonstration. We might attract the corresponding bodies’ attention in this way. We are also people and need to be paid some attention,” said demonstrators.

According to them, they have paid 70 lari to JSC “GurjaanGas” to supply them with gas and other services; however, they have not received any gas yet.

Giorgi Machavariani, the director of the ”GurjaanGas” declared that the reason for the problem was the three kilometers long gas pipeline that had been out of order when he arrived at the demonstration.

Ramaz Kerechashvili, Gamgebeli (governor) of the Gurjaani Municipality, hopes the 9 April Street residents will soon be supplied with gas. “We take the people’s interests in consideration but the pipes have gone wrong and we could not do anything with that. I think the situation will soon be improved,” says Kerechashvili.

According to JSC GurjaanGas, 45 000GEL has been allocated to repair the system. They also said that tender will be announced in several days and the winning company will start the repair-works within 40 days.
