Minister of Education Opposes to Broadcast Personal Information on TV

February 19, 2007

According to the Georgian Ministry of Education, the items about mothers having abandoned their children at maternity homes or thrown away on rubbish damps have been broadcast on TV very frequently recently.

The Ministry defines that under the Law on “Adopting the Child”, Article 6 potential parents cannot be offered these children so publicly.

Similar items will encourage the reveal of personal information and consequently, make private lives public. The Ministry of Education and Science does not appreciate the situation.

The Minister of Education, Aleksandre Lomaia, has already applied to the board of TV Companies and asked them to regulate the revealing of similar topics on TV.

The Georgian Ministry of Education and Science, as a central body for guardianship and supervision of children, will coordinate and monitor the process of child adoption in the country.

Process of children’s protection is regulated by Georgian Legislation and the Convention of the Rights of the Child that was joined by Georgia in 1994.
