Mentally Disabled Person Blames Police for Suppression

February 19, 2007

Fedia Chernomorov, a resident of the village of Zegaani in the Gurjaani District blames the police for suppression. Chernomorov and his wife, Nato Megrelishvili, stated to the Human Rights Center that on the basis of their testimonies, they made at the police station, three people were detained. On February 18, the Gurjaani District Court sentenced Dato Bostoghanashvili, Andro and Heno Malkhazianis to two-month pre-trial imprisonment.

At this moment, relatives and neighbors of the detainees are holding a demonstration in front of the Gurjaani District Court building. They are protesting the court decision. The victims said that they have appealed to the court to let them say the truth in vain.  “The policemen paid me money and threatened. I do not agree with many questions in the testimony but I got afraid and signed it,” said Nato Megrelishvili, a victim in the criminal case.

Demonstrators are urging the Public Defender and human rights organizations for help.
