Employees of the Uflistsikhe Museum Demand the Frozen Salaries

February 19, 2007

Employees of the Uflistsikhe Historical Museum demand their salaries that they have not received for three years. They applied to the Human Rights Center’s Gori Office for help.

The human Rights Center’s Gori office found out that these people did not receive their salaries in 1993-2003. The employees of the museum said that they managed to keep the museum with their own expenses during the years.

In 2003, the museum employees petitioned to the Interim President Nino Burjanadze. The later forwarded the petition to the Ministry of Finances. The Deputy Minister of Finances replied that that time budget did not have any funds to pay their salaries. Though the state has adopted three budgets since that time, none of the budgets -central, territorial or local- envisaged the sources to increase the funds for the museum.

Robert Maghlakelidze, the chief of the Shida Kartli Cultural Department, does not have any information regarding the situation and sent us to the Ministry of Culture…

Maia Azmaifarashvili, the Deputy Governor of Shida Kartli, gave us the same answer and sent us to the Ministry of Culture; however she said she would get in touch with the Ministry herself too…

The “Human Rights Center” will provide the museum employees with legal assistance at the court.

Saba Tsitsikashvili, Gori
